Bacteriostatic Water
USP-grade sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol preservative, essential for reconstituting lyophilized peptides and maintaining multi-dose sterility.
Mechanism of Action
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a bacteriostatic preservative that inhibits microbial growth through disruption of bacterial cell membranes. This allows the water to be used for multiple entries into a single vial over 28 days while maintaining sterility. The benzyl alcohol does not affect peptide stability at this concentration.
Key Published Studies
Antimicrobial Effectiveness of Benzyl Alcohol as a Preservative in Parenteral Solutions
Dey BP, Thoma LA, Kann JH — Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1983)
0.9% benzyl alcohol effectively inhibited growth of common bacterial contaminants in parenteral solutions for at least 28 days after initial puncture.
Compatibility and Stability of Reconstituted Peptide Hormones in Bacteriostatic Water
Trissel LA, Zhang Y, Kwan JW — American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (1996)
Peptide hormones reconstituted in bacteriostatic water maintained potency and sterility for 28 days under proper refrigeration conditions.
Dosage Range
Use as needed for reconstitution. Typical volumes: 1-3 mL per peptide vial depending on desired concentration.
Reconstitution
Ready to use. Draw desired volume using a sterile syringe and inject into peptide vial through the rubber septum.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-25C) or refrigerated. Discard 28 days after first puncture. Protect from light.
Half-Life
Not applicable — bacteriostatic water is a solvent, not an active compound.
